Outokumpu deliver duplex to Finnish dam project
Outokumpu has delivered special stainless steel for the project where the dam in Tammerkoski rapids upper reaches will be completely rebuilt. All the main structural parts of the sluice and flood gates will be fabricated from Outokumpu's lean duplex LDX 2101® to ensure uninterrupted, largely maintenance-free service life for two centuries.
The Tammerkoski rapids flow through the centre of the Finnish city, Tampere, running four hydroelectric power plants. In a rehabilitation project the dam walls will be renovated, and the dam structures that date back to the early 1900's will be replaced. Tampereen Energiantuotanto Oy, the energy company responsible for the project, was looking for a solution to bring the rapids' two channels to the highest standards in the culturally and historically valuable site. "Duplex LDX 2101 was an optimal solution for this project. The strength of the material enables thinner and lighter structures which makes it easier to operate the gates. The high corrosion resistance ensures maintenance-free operation. Additionally, the hardness of the material surface protects the gates for example against load caused by ice", says Seppo Koli from Outokumpu. The project in Tampere will be completed during 2012. |
